The outline for a typical day in each program consists of a basic framework for familiarity and routine, but still remains flexible with the timing of transitions. This allows teachers to follow the natural energy and rhythms of the children.

Usually each morning begins with a group meeting where teachers engage the children in songs and stories until most children have arrived in class. This time is very valuable to teachers and children as we often introduce activities and new materials as a demonstration and provocation. This provides the children an opportunity to be aware of the choices available to them in the environment, and creates a sense of wonder and curiosity for the children. Teachers also find meeting time to be ideal opportunity to revisit any dialogue or events that may have occurred on the previous day.

The majority of your child’s time at preschool consists of free play that includes many opportunities for collaborative work and play at the wealth of activities within the classrooms. These play-based learning opportunities may be set out by teachers, or develop naturally and spontaneously based the children’s interest in something particular at any given moment. During free play the children are afforded space to eat their snack (which families provide) at any point in time.

After an engaging hour and a half or so, it is important that the children have the time and space to move their bodies more freely. Whenever the sun is shining the children take advantage of the weather by playing on the preschool’s outdoor playground or by going for walks within the community. If the weather is less than desirable, there is an indoor gym space with gross motor and climbing equipment for the children to utilize.

Towards the end of the day there is time is set aside for the all of the children to come together again as a group, which is commonly referred to as ‘circle time’. This circle time consists of books, stories, music and movement, and so on. Dismissal to parents/caregivers follows.
